The engraved roller is the biggest fixed cost and amortisation decides the margin: rolls run ¥3,000–8,000 and last 50,000–150,000 m depending on depth and hardness — spread over a single 1,000 m order that's ¥5–8/m, unsellable, so amortise over expected lifetime volume and lock the pattern exclusively to long-term clients. Prototype lead times: a day to set up and trial a stock roll; rush samples go through a laser-engraved resin roller (~¥400, ~100 m life). Quote = stock + processing + roller share + wastage (trial blanks at 1.2×). One studio turned "pattern licensing plus low roller amortisation" into 70% repeat business.
