Santa Clara del Cobre: Hammered Copper of Mexico

In Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacán, Purépecha smiths have sunk vessels from a single ingot since pre-Columbian times: scrap copper is remelted into an 8–15 kg billet, heated to about 700 °C and hammered into a bowl through a dozen re-heats, the rim trued last—"one piece, no weld" is the local standard of judgement. The community's work received Mexico's National Prize for Arts and Sciences in 2010, and its Holy Week copper fair still judges by radiating fish-scale hammer marks and ever-thinning walls.
