Instrument makers roll a spiral texture onto brass drum shells (14″ snare, 0.8 mm H70): knurl on the lathe at 60–100 rpm, 0.3 mm/r feed, split into two passes of 0.15 mm depth per side so the thin shell never buckles. The pattern is not just looks — the spiral acts as stiffening ribs, raising hoop stiffness about 20% and focusing the drum's voice; straight knurling also improves grip on some horn bodies. Keep knurl pressure constant via spring loading (80–120 N) — pressure dips leave "dead spots" on acoustically sensitive shells.
