In Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacán, Purépecha artisans have hammered copper for centuries: scrap (old wire and vessels) is melted over wood fires into cakes, then raised through repeated 700°C anneals into cauldrons (cazos), ladles and chargers up to 1.2 m across without a seam. In the 20th century sculptor James Metcalf settled in the village; mentorship brought artisans national arts awards and listing as Mexican cultural heritage. Each August the Feria del Cobre stages hammering contests; tens of thousands of hammer blows leave a surface texture that signatures the maker, sold to galleries and hotels across Europe and the Americas.
