Copper and glass combine by cast-and-set: first cast a copper frame with recesses or openwork (silicon bronze or T2, allowing 1–2 mm glass shrinkage clearance), then pour or press hot glass (potash-lime or lead glass) at 750–850°C into the seat and anneal slowly to relieve stress. Designers such as Tom Dixon use related methods in lighting. The key is expansion matching (copper ~17×10⁻⁶/K; choose glass at 9–11×10⁻⁶/K and rely mainly on mechanical interlock), with gasketed joints to stop condensation-driven crevice corrosion.
