Albrecht Dürer's engraved plates (Melencolia I, 1471–1528) were cut entirely with the diamond-section burin: under magnification each line swells from a light start through a deep belly to a tapered exit, with crossings up to 4–5 lines per millimetre in three stacked layers for nine tonal steps; drapery runs long parallels, shadows cross-hatch, and highlights rely on a 0.05 mm plate tone. Copyists first map tool directions by photomicrography, then practise a burin "tone ladder" (0.05–0.25 mm depth grades) for pressure control—burin work cannot be corrected, so transfer the drawing precisely.
