Traditional art-foundry apprenticeships run in three stages: the first 6–12 months are spent shell-breaking, cutting sprues and grinding, training the eye for defects; the second stage covers wax chasing, shell building and slurry control (silica-zircon slurry at 1.7–1.8 g/cm³); the third pairs the apprentice with the melt crew to judge pouring readiness at 1150–1200°C. Italian bottega and Japanese foundries still keep master-and-apprentice sharing one furnace; 3–5 years typically produce someone who can carry a sculpture from molding to patina alone.
