Since 1609, when the Maeda clan of Kaga recruited founders to build the town, Takaoka has run a four-tier division of labor — patternmaker, caster, polisher, colorist — and still produces roughly nine-tenths of Japan's copperware (Buddhist fittings, tea utensils, statues). Its color-standard system defines 30+ finishes (polished ground, verdigris, silver/gold) applied by colorists using sulfides and tea solutions. Designated a traditional craft of Japan, Takaoka honors master casters as "Contemporary Master Craftsmen," and its foundries stay open to visitors. ---
