A honeycomb stake (Ø8–12 mm hole array) with a rawhide mallet sinks broad curves fast without single-dent marks; laser-cut card/PETG curvature templates check each pass faster than depth calipers. Keep 4–6 mm webs between holes and pad with leather or felt to avoid hole imprinting. For repeat curves, 0.6 mm printed PETG templates are cheap and archivable—ideal for studio-scale roughing.
