Traditional gold size is a cooked varnish of raw lacquer or tung oil with rosin, brushed thin and left to "tack"—dry to touch yet slightly sticky (the "second-stage dry")—before laying leaf. Modern acrylic or polyurethane sizes are more controllable. Too thick yellows, too thin fails to grip; 50–60% humidity and dust-free air decide success. ---
