Wax pyrolyzing in a burnout furnace releases carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and PAHs: duct the furnace outdoors in metal flue, hold the burnout room slightly negative, and set CO first alarms at 25 ppm; prefer steam dewaxing to open-flame burnout. Fit canopy hoods over melt pots and wax benches at 0.5 m/s face velocity or better. After three mild poisonings from a blocked flue, one Canadian art foundry made it policy to check flue draft with a smoke tracer before every burnout and replace CO sensors every six months; staff exposed to wax fume get annual lung-function tests on file.
