DIY Fold-forming Tools: Wedge Punches and Hardwood Forming Blocks

Repeatable wedge folds depend on self-made tooling: turn wedge punches from medium-carbon steel at a 12–20° included angle—sharper angles give crisp creases, wider ones rounder lines—and harden the working end to HRC 50, tempering to blue-grey against snapping. For the forming block use maple or lignum vitae with a half-round groove along the fold line, waxed with beeswax; pressing the seam inner face evenly before opening avoids the local thinning of direct steel hammer blows. On 0.8 mm copper a 15° wedge fed 2 mm per pass holds crease straightness within 0.2 mm/m; touch up the wedge faces after trial folds when replicating angles in batches.
