St. Mary Cathedral in Hildesheim (a World Heritage site famed for its thousand-year bronze doors and the Bernward Column) replaced its post-war copper roof during the 2010–2014 restoration. The case core: two-zone treatment — visible nave slopes left unsealed to weather naturally over the traditional 20–30 year verdigris cycle, while steep tower faces, scoured by fast runoff, were pre-patinated and sealed with two clear fluorocarbon coats to stabilize color. The chapter 20-year no-major-maintenance goal was met through differentiated zoning plus five-yearly drone photo comparison of color appearance, balancing heritage character against upkeep cost.
