Premium French horn and trumpet bells are still hand-raised: a 0.45–0.55 mm brass (H70/CuZn30) disc is spun or sunk into a rough flare, then hammered circumferentially on a long tapered stake out to a 300 mm-class rim, with 5–8 anneals (600–650°C) along the way. Hammered bells damp vibration less than spun ones — players describe a warmer overtone — and custom houses like Thein (Germany) and Edwards (USA) offer them as options. Hammer marks may be polished out or kept; the rim is wired for stiffness. At 6–10 hours per bell they price 2–3 times machine-made flares.
