Cymbal Planishing: Hammering for Tone

Around seventy percent of a cymbal's voice comes from the hammer. B20 bronze (80% copper, 20% tin) is spun to its bow, then planished by hand to a tonemap—dense at the centre, thinning across the bow, avoiding the bell—testing the sound after each pass: dull, strike the edge; wild, return to the centre. Hand-hammered lines from Zildjian (founded Istanbul 1623, now Norwell USA) and Sabian take 45–90 min per cymbal, planishing and tuning in one act—something machine hammering can copy in position but never in feedback.
