The school of rubbings around Xi'an's Beilin (Forest of Steles) Museum is famed for wujin "black-gold" rubbings—ink deep and lacquer-bright—counterposed to the north's chanyi "cicada-wing" style of thin pale tone. Wujin method: damp the paper to 70%, pack it into the lettering with a palm brush, lay the first ink pass "three light dabs, one firm," and build four to six passes to a dense sheen. After historical disputes over washing steles for re-rubbing, original-stone rubbing is now banned outright—official replicas and digital rubbings are the legal sources. Practise the style on a 15 cm replica stele, tampo never leaving the paper.
