Recreate rubbable plates from photos of stone carving: desaturate to a greyscale height map and engrave 2 mm brass with a 30 W fibre laser—60% power, 1000 mm/s, 0.1 mm hatch, 0.2–0.4 mm deep; then 220-grit blast off oxide and kiss the high points so grooves hold ink and fields print evenly. Fragile originals are never touched, making this ideal for touring-exhibit interactives and merchandising. Mind copyright: commercial use of museum-object photos needs a licence.
