Rodin developed The Thinker from about 1880 as a ~70 cm plaster; in 1902–04 craftsman Henri Lebossé enlarged it to 180 cm with a pointing machine, and the Rudier foundry in Paris cast the bronze by lost-wax or sand casting. Original casts run 4–6 mm walls, cast in sections (body and base) and welded, then hot-patinated with oxides and sulfides to the brown-green finish Rodin personally approved, pour by pour. His practice of authorizing multiple originals shaped the modern sculpture copyright and edition system, each cast bearing the foundry's side stamp.
