Metallography and SEM-EDS on Warring-states inlaid bronzes (such as the tiger-and-deer screen stands from the Zhongshan royal tombs) show vertical or dovetail chased grooves with visible graver marks; gold wire at 90–96% and silver at 92–98% purity, fixed purely by press-fit with no solder or adhesive. Many grooves carry a 2–5 μm corrosion interlayer—centuries of expansive burial corrosion locked the wires in place, explaining their survival. The findings guide modern replication: undercut the groove mouth 0.05 mm and work-harden wire before setting for far more durable grip.
