For dented 18th-century silver, conservation follows minimal intervention: X-ray the seams first, relieve stress with local hot air at about 200 °C—below the old solder's softening point—then lightly planish on a lead or resin-backed stake with a nylon-faced hammer at 30% overlap, no more than three rounds. Conservators accept 0.2 mm of residual waviness rather than erase historical hammer evidence. ---
